December 15, 2022 @ has 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM (East Africa Time)

Climate change has left millions of people without food in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia. In 2021, rapidly increasing temperatures exposed vulnerable populations (adults older than 65 years, and children younger than one year) to 3.7 billion more heatwave days than annually in 1986-2005. Angola is also going through its worst drought in 40 years, with almost 1.6 million people facing starvation and thousands moving to Namibia as climate refugees.

With these devastating events happening globally, why is the health impact of climate change downplayed? Climate change is amongst the top priorities for leaders, organisations and countries globally, yet, the focus of mitigation and adaptation efforts often exclude its impact on human health which happens to be the most painful means through which populations experience its effects.

The upcoming Africa Dialogues webinar provides an opportunity to elevate the dialogue on the need for stronger policies and resource dedication to human health within the climate change mitigation and adaptation framework.

The webinar will be presented in a plenary format with breakout sessions to allow for deeper engagement between the speakers and the audience, as they unpack the linkages between climate change and health and what must be done to position health at the heart of climate action plans.

Policymakers, climate activists and health experts will come together during this webinar to:

  • Highlight the impacts of climate change on health and make a case for prioritising health systems in response to the growing burden of climate change.
  • Advocate for the mainstreaming of health in climate change conversations, mitigation, adaptation, and financing policies.
  • Spotlight best practices in building adaptive, climate-resilient health systems, and discuss strategies and actions needed to drive action in this area.
