Globally, the total fertility rate (TFR)—or average lifetime births per woman—declined from 3.2 in 1990 to 2.3 in 2020. However, with many countries lacking reliable data, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global birth and death rates is unclear. While the pandemic is likely the cause of an increase in death rates in some countries, the pandemic’s impact on fertility rates is still mostly unknown.
Fortunately, PRB’s 2021 World Population Data Sheet sheds light on how these vital stats could impact our world and, specifically, fertility and births to adolescent mothers.

The 2021 World Population Data Sheet
The 2021 World Population Data Sheet presents the latest population, health, and environment indicators for more than 200 countries. This year, PRB’s demographers took an in-depth look at fertility patterns and trends. They warn that it’s still too early to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on population shifts. Nonetheless, their findings on birth rates across countries are revealing, with the world population on course to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050. Published annually since 1962, the Data Sheet provides demographic indicators including birth and death rates, life expectancy, and other critical population indicators.
