SMART Advocacy User’s Guide

That One Thing - The one FP/RH update you need to focus on this week

Dear Family Planning Champion,

Advocating for policy and funding changes in family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH)  can help positively impact health outcomes and amplify the voices of overlooked communities. But how does one advocate? And more importantly, how does one successfully advocate?

A new user guide on the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound) Advocacy approach can help individuals and groups build effective advocacy strategies to help achieve both large and small policy and funding changes.

SMART Advocacy User’s Guide

Though SMART Advocacy is a well-known strategy, what makes this guide notable are new exercises, a focus on monitoring and learning, and a format that enables better virtual advocacy collaboration. It incorporates lessons from years of success and allows users, whether seasoned advocates or novices, to tackle challenges with confidence. Developed by Advance Family Planning (AFP) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at Johns Hopkins, more than 250 organizations in at least 26 countries already use SMART Advocacy to address a range of issues.

Read the guide (available in English, French, and Spanish) for practical, adaptable, and transformational strategies rooted in simplicity.
