Knowledge Innovations

Transforming the way we find, share, and use knowledge to improve voluntary family planning programs.

There is a wealth of family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) knowledge accumulated through research and practical programmatic experience. However, ensuring that this knowledge is shared among FP/RH professionals, accessible to all, and applied in practice remains a challenge. Knowledge SUCCESS is working directly with FP/RH professionals around the world to design better tools and solutions to support their work in FP/RH programs as they seek relevant information, share evidence and best practices, and apply learnings to their context. Our transformative approach blends together knowledge management, behavioral economics, and design thinking. Read on to learn more about our resources and activities.

FP insight: Powered by Knowledge SUCCESS

FP insight

The family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) community has an overwhelming number of sources to go to for information. What’s been missing is a tool to bring everything together in one place. We created FP insight, a website for FP/RH professionals to discover and organize their favorite resources. Inspired by Pinterest and other social media platforms, FP insight is available in 21 languages and designed for easy use by anyone, anywhere. Users save resources to FP insight as posts and collections. FPinsight newsfeeds personalize updates for users, who can download HTML articles onto their computer for offline reading later. Together, we create a body of knowledge that benefits the whole FP/RH community.

The Pitch - Funding knowledge champions in family planning

The Pitch

The Pitch is a series of regional competitions that places stakeholders in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia at the center of designing and implementing knowledge management innovations. Four KM Champion Innovators will be awarded up to USD $50,000 each, through subawards, in order to implement their innovative ideas. Launched in January 2021, the Pitch landing page received more than 1,000 visits in its first two weeks. More than 80 organizations submitted ideas. We selected 10 semi-finalists to pitch their idea to a panel of judges. We will announce up to four KM Champion Innovators during YouTube Premiere episodes.

Learning Circles. Sharing what we know in family planning

Learning Circles

Highly interactive and small group-based, the Learning Circles model guides mid-career program managers and technical advisors working in FP/RH through supportive discussions into what works and what doesn’t in program implementation. Learning Circles participants can generate insights with a small, trusted group of peers in just 3 months to improve their FP/RH programs. Cohort members come from the same region, so that shared experiences are relevant to everyone’s context. The idea for Learning Circles came from a direct need for informal cross-organization learning and collaboration, expressed by FP/RH professionals during regional co-creation workshops held in mid-2020.

People-Planet Connection

This new learning and collaborative space has been co-created by and for global development professionals who are interested in the intersections between human population, health, and the environment. People-Planet Connection encompasses Population, Health, and Environment (PHE) as well as the broader Population, Environment, and Development (PED) field. Key features include (at time of launch) more than 250 resources on PHE and PED, a discussion forum, and connections to other existing PHE/PED tools and events, including a newsletter, activity map, and calendar, with all links in one central place for quick access.

The Future of Knowledge Management for Family Planning and Reproductive Health Programs

Knowledge SUCCESS hosted a series of four regional workshops in mid 2020 with FP/RH professionals from Anglophone Africa, Francophone Africa, Asia, and the United States. Using a design thinking approach, participants identified common barriers and behaviors that are limiting the flow of family planning knowledge between programs, countries, and regions — and opportunities to transform the way our FP/RH community approaches knowledge management. This report analyzes trends and findings across all four workshops by each step in the design thinking process.

Family Planning Professionals Behavioral Journey in Knowledge Management

What psychological and behavioral drivers influence how people find and share knowledge?  This report explores formative research findings and specific behavioral economics mechanisms (choice overload, cognitive overload, learning preferences, social norms, incentives) that are relevant to the ways in which FP/RH professionals seek out and share information. The report recommends how organizations and programs can address barriers and opportunities, and explains the implications of these findings for knowledge management within the FP/RH community.
