Family planning’s contributions to poverty reduction, gender equality, public health improvement, development, and human rights advancement cannot be underestimated. To leverage these societal benefits and help achieve its goal of universal health coverage by 2030, Ghana’s National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) recently added family planning to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) benefit package.

Ghana’s First Lady Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo made the announcement at the official launch of the 2021 NHIS Week celebration. President Nana Akufo-Addo has promised to “bring primary health care services to the doorsteps of our people without fail.” This is the first time family planning has been added to Ghana’s NHIS benefit package. Analysts expect the benefits package will save more lives, be more cost-efficient, and improve uptake of contraceptive methods among women.
