Creating Equitable Access to High-Quality Family Planning Information and Services: A Strategic Planning Guide

That One Thing - The one FP/RH update you need to focus on this week

Dear Family Planning Champion,

Equity with regard to contraceptive access is a hot topic among family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) advocates and practitioners. Gaps in equity exist within all health sectors, and FP/RH is no different. But what exactly does equity in family planning access look like? Eliminating the barriers that hinder an individual’s access to FP services and contraceptive methods, sometimes exacerbated by their age, race, ethnicity, religion, or another factor.

To help you address these inequities and ensure that people have equitable access to FP/RH services, this week we share a new guide from the High Impact Practices (HIP) partnership.

Creating Equitable Access to High-Quality Family Planning Information and Services: A Strategic Planning Guide

The guide intends to help program planners, managers, and development partners identify inequities and create interventions to help address them. It recommends the following steps:

  1. Determine whose needs are not being met.
  2. Determine what barriers individuals from this population group face in accessing high-quality family planning information and services.
  3. Make the FP program more responsive to the values and preferences of all people.
  4. Monitor implementation.

Download the English version of the guide for more details on how this systematic approach can help you create equitable programs that recognize the unique barriers different groups face in accessing FP/RH services and information. French, English, and Portuguese translations are coming soon!
