In a society deeply rooted in traditional family customs, it is not common for low-and middle-income families, who live with their parents and siblings together to discuss family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) practices, it remains a taboo.
Descriptive analysis of financial data trends in Nigeria, specifically in Ebonyi State, painted a rather gloomy picture for family planning (FP). Dr. Chinyere Mbachu, Doctor at Health Policy Research Group, College of Medicine at the University of Nigeria, and co-author of this research discussed how financing has an impact on reproductive health (RH) family planning.

High Impact Practices in Family Planning (HIPs) are a set of evidence-based family planning practices vetted by experts against specific criteria and documented in an easy-to-use format. The Evaluation of High Impact Practices in Family Planning Products sought to understand whether and how HIP products were being used among health professionals at the country and global levels. Using key informant interviews (KIIs), a small study team found that various HIP products are used by family planning experts and professionals to inform policy, strategy, and practice.
Marie Stopes Uganda’s Gulu Light Outreach provides free mobile clinics that engage Northern Ugandan communities on reproductive health. Using peer-to-peer influence and outreach in markets and community centers, the team educates young people on contraceptives. It aims to spur family planning and support a culture that prioritizes the futures of its youth and the sustainability of its environment.
Though discussions around reproductive health services should be open to all, adolescent boys and girls experience often don’t get to take part in them, with their parents and guardians making most decisions about health on their behalf. Kenya’s health department is implementing various interventions focusing on young people. Through The Challenge Initiative’s (TCI) program, Mombasa County received funding to implement high-impact interventions that address some of the challenges young people experience in accessing contraception and other sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services.
Likhaan is a non-government, nonprofit organization established in 1995 to respond to the sexual and reproductive health needs of women experiencing poverty. It runs community-based health programs anchored on three strategies: community education and mobilization; provision of primary, integrated sexual, and reproductive health (SRH) care; and advocacy for rights-based and equitable health policies.
