Team Lead, WHO AFRO Reproductive, Maternal and Healthy Ageing Program

Dr. Triphonie Nkurunziza, Team Lead for the WHO AFRO Reproductive, Maternal and Healthy Ageing Program, is an accomplished obstetrician-gynecologist with more than 25 years of practice in the field of public health, with a particular focus on reproductive, maternal, newborn and healthy aging health at the operational, management and leadership levels. Originally from Burundi, she was a senior physician and chief medical officer at the University Hospital of Bujumbura (Burundi) from 1997 to 2005 and Minister of Health from 2005 to 2007. She joined WHO in 2008 as regional advisor for reproductive and maternal health. She has since been appointed Team Leader for the Reproductive, Maternal and Ageing Health Program (2013-present). She has also served as WHO Representative in Benin (2005), Algeria (2017-2018) and Equatorial Guinea from January to July 2020, respectively.
