Breakthrough ACTION
Connecting the Dots Between Evidence and Experience combines the latest evidence with implementation experiences to help technical advisors and program managers understand emerging trends in family planning and inform adaptations to their own programs. The inaugural edition focuses on the impact of COVID-19 on family planning in Africa and Asia.
On September 29, 2021, Breakthrough ACTION hosted a discussion on meeting youth family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) needs. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in three discussions that highlighted Breakthrough ACTION’s resources and knowledge on expanding youth access to FP/RH services and information.
On October 21, 2021, Breakthrough ACTION hosted a roundtable discussion on the topic of gender and social norms. This event provided an opportunity for those working in family planning and reproductive health to learn about Breakthrough ACTION’s work addressing gender and social norms across diverse country programs and to share their own experiences.
Breakthrough ACTION crée, teste et applique à grande échelle de nouvelles approches hybrides du CSC en se fondant sur ses recherches novatrices, mais aussi sur son évaluation de programmes et de stratégies de CSC rentables éprouvés. Breakthrough ACTION develops, tests, and scales up new and hybrid approaches to SBC, informed by Breakthrough RESEARCH’s cutting-edge research and evaluation of proven, cost-effective SBC strategies and programs. Together, these USAID-funded sister projects are harnessing SBC evidence and practice to increase priority health behaviors for improved health and development outcomes.
A major barrier to young people’s access and use of family planning is mistrust. This new tool leads providers and young potential clients through a process that addresses this barrier by fostering empathy, creating opportunities to improve youth family planning service delivery.
Vasectomy is a safe and effective contraceptive method that offers benefits for individuals and heterosexual couples who know they do not want to have any—or any more—children. According to Breakthrough ACTION, a USAID-funded project that develops and tests new tools for social and behavior change in family planning and reproductive health, increasing access to vasectomy would increase method choice, improve family planning and reproductive health outcomes, and promote gender equality by providing an opportunity for men to share responsibility for reproduction.
Social and behavior change (SBC) approaches can increase the use of modern contraceptives by addressing the attitudes and social norms that influence demand. However, they often do not receive attention, partly because many practitioners are not effectively measuring their SBC efforts. Breakthrough ACTION interviewed voluntary family planning stakeholders in West Africa to learn why.
