In September 2021, Knowledge SUCCESS and the Policy, Advocacy, and Communication Enhanced for Population and Reproductive Health (PACE) project launched the first in a series of community-driven dialogues on the People-Planet Connection Discourse platform exploring the links between population, health, and the environment. Representatives from five organizations, including youth leaders from PACE’s Population, Environment, Development Youth Multimedia Fellowship, posed discussion questions to engage participants around the globe on the links between gender and climate change. The one week of dialogue generated dynamic questions, observations, and solutions. Here’s what PACE’s youth leaders had to say about their experience and their suggestions for how the discourse can be translated into concrete solutions.
In the final year of SHOPS Plus, we used an approach to arrive at key themes for our last year. We will use the themes as a framework to organize our learning across the project. The steps below are not, of course, the only way to organize learnings, and they are a work in progress. We will know how well the framework holds up once we get further into programming our events. Alan highlights why AYSRH issues are so important to overall discussions about sexual and reproductive health, and rights (SRHR) and reframing the narrative around young leaders and the intersectionality of SRHR.
The role of patriarchy in South Sudan was clear when Maper Village community chiefs and members resisted male midwives being deployed to Aweil Hospital's Maternity Ward. To combat the stigma, the South Sudan Nurses and Midwives Association (SSNAMA) piloted the “Safe Motherhood Campaign” for community engagement. They addressed misconceptions about maternal health care, helping to change attitudes about male midwives and nurses.
On September 29, 2021, Breakthrough ACTION hosted a discussion on meeting youth family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) needs. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in three discussions that highlighted Breakthrough ACTION’s resources and knowledge on expanding youth access to FP/RH services and information.
Key populations, including female sex workers, face barriers to health care access that include stigma, criminalization, and gender-based violence. In many cases, these barriers can be mitigated by peer educators, who bring valuable insight and may engender trust with clients.
